Possible 5 star?? Not sure how I feel about the victim blaming at the end? Regardless of what happened, Josie was still a victim, and Walter’s and Pat’s behavior cannot be glossed over??? Other than that, I would’ve given this 5 stars.

Throughout the first half of the book I was so drawn in and fully ready to give it a 5 star review, couldn't wait to see where the story would go and how it would end!
Unfortunately to my dismay, it ended in almost justifying abuse and grooming. A 16-year old cannot "seduce" a grown man and a child neglected by their mother isn't just "born evil". It feels like a bad true crime episode feeding into all of the stereotypes regarding criminals who have been abused, mistreated and are severly traumatized prior to their crimes. The last few pages left  an "open ending" so the reader could decide what to believe and to kind of create their own narrative but what kind of narrative are you expected to create when you've read few hundered pages of justified abuse story?! Incredibly disappointed in the way the story turned out, it had a lot of potential in the beginning.

Let me preface this with the fact that I listened to the audiobook version which was 10/10 amazingly done. Sounded just like a podcast. So that may have something to do with my review, unclear. But I think the book was really good regardless. Psychologically thrilling, multiple viewpoints, right up my alley. I only wish there was more lol or a follow up second book, either after the events, or even prior, into Josie’s past. A well done book.

Lisa Jewell is an outstanding thriller writer. I could not put this one down and at the end of the book, I still have no idea what the truth is.

Solid twists and turns, interesting characters, good introductions of characters over time, a few tells along the way but not too many to make it predictable.

The audiobook is narrated really well and the music helps set the tone at appropriate places.
