I really enjoyed listening to this. However I'm not a fan of books that have an ambiguous ending.

This was good and creepy and might be one of my favourites by Jewell. I liked how the podcast was used throughout, but never felt overused. The plot was off-putting and kept me guessing the whole time. Jewell is great at creating uncertainty, but sometimes she relies on totally unlikable characters to do so, but in this case having Alix grounding the story really helped. She was hard to like but had redeeming qualities that made me want to keep reading to find out what was going to happen. Jewell really seems to be on the upswing again, since I think this is my first 4* read of hers since Then She Was Gone .

Throughout the first half of the book I was so drawn in and fully ready to give it a 5 star review, couldn't wait to see where the story would go and how it would end!
Unfortunately to my dismay, it ended in almost justifying abuse and grooming. A 16-year old cannot "seduce" a grown man and a child neglected by their mother isn't just "born evil". It feels like a bad true crime episode feeding into all of the stereotypes regarding criminals who have been abused, mistreated and are severly traumatized prior to their crimes. The last few pages left an "open ending" so the reader could decide what to believe and to kind of create their own narrative but what kind of narrative are you expected to create when you've read few hundered pages of justified abuse story?! Incredibly disappointed in the way the story turned out, it had a lot of potential in the beginning.

i liked the first two acts but when the theme went from being about how people who experience trauma sometimes gain the capability to harm others into how this girl is cray cray 😝 and forced an old man to date her i was kind of over it. the writing was really good but i just didn’t really fw the ending or how walter’s character was handled.

I don't know how to feel.

No one in the book is reliable or can be trusted, but it seems to be true that Josie and Walter's relationship began when she was a teenager and he was in his forties. HE IS A PEDOPHILE AND SHE WAS ABUSED. No matter what happened later or if she "manipulated him".

The audiobook has great production though, 5 stars for that.
