This book has been a favorite since we brought it home from Powell’s books.

I had moderate expectations for it. I’m a huge Nina LaCour fan and I was excited about her children’s book because I could finally share my favorite author with my nieces.

But I was blown away after the first read.

The book has so much emotion written in a way that’s easy for kids to feel and understand.

We see our main character’s go through a week in her life without her Mommy. Some things stay the same, like errands and her playgroup. But something’s are different. Like two cups instead of three and returned blueberries.

Her and her Mama try to make the best of it while waiting for Mommy to return. The video call mommy and watch movies.

And when she does return , it’s not the reunion they were expecting, and that’s okay. Her mommy doesn’t force hugs, they talk about it and wait until she’s ready.

Keylani Juanita did a wonderful job bring the words and feelings to life.

Every time we reread it there’s new details we notice. Like Chloe’s cat out at night. And baby pictures of the family on the walls. And fruit motifs throughout the story.

This book is perfect for anyone who is missing someone.

Just got this book in at work and had to read it. Now I'm crying at my desk! Such a sweet story of a little girl missing her mommy when she's on a work trip.

Si querían que llorara lo lograron, cosas así hacen que quiera tener hij@s y no me gusta eso.
Es un cuento muy lindo, amo las ilustraciones y amo la historia, bien lindo todo.
Si me disculpan me iré a llorar por otros minutos

There’s so much to love in this beautiful, sweet story! ...

This story of a young girl navigating life with her Mama while her Mommy is on a business trip is so relatable—as someone whose father sometimes goes on arduously long business trips, I know exactly the feeling of blechiness that our main character deals with!

Nina LaCour’s writing perfectly captures the perspective of a child and doesn’t lose its luster amidst the illustrations, and the story’s plot is packed to the gills with sweetness—movies with Mama, supportive teachers, chores turned into fun for our protagonist, and beautiful little inside jokes for the family! I also appreciated the chance for our protagonist to feel her feelings when Mommy returns, since being without her for so long isn’t quite instantaneous to repair.

Also, the diversity in the story is simply wonderful—a biracial couple with two moms raises this delightful child! And yet, the diversity fades into the background to allow the story to take center stage.

And Kaylani Juanita’s beautiful illustrations seal the deal—the vibrant colors and satisfyingly intricate details...bring to life the story of this wonderful, loving family that distance cannot keep apart!

What’s my verdict? A beautiful story of love between a child and her parents, even long-distance—don’t miss this one!
