I really enjoyed the world building, and the exploration of each character as individuals as well as their group dynamics. the perspective taking of the chapters was also interesting, and the narrators all added nuance to their performances in ways I appreciated (especially during internal monologues). unfortunately Part 6 definitely got too trigger heavy for me, and I found the expositions started to get both much longer and much less believable. not the book for me, unfortunately!

It was quite slow but the author would slowly reveal small plot twists throughout which
aims to mislead you because the big key plot twist warps everything you’ve read so it’s totally unpredictable because you see each character’s perspective apart from the ones who are truly the masterminds behind these particular initiates being chosen so you are seeing it through their lens and are even more confused and creating personal theories which makes what really happens at the end more surprising than anything else because we now finally know what’s happening but the characters still don’t know the real reason why they’re there. I’m definitely reading the other books in this trilogy! I have a feeling everything I just wrote made no sense I was aiming to not spoil so it’s a book you need to read if you want to understand what I wrote 😭 it’s also got such a diverse set of characters and it’s such refreshing representation in all honesty :’)

Okay, I'll be quick here (I won't)

The book is for sure worth the read, it was a quick and easy read ( or listen if your me, the very wide cast for the audiobook was very nice and refreshing). You really do have to be in it for the characters though, because the plot is kind of lost in the sauce for most of the book. At times, it truly feels irrelevant that they are the most powerful magic users in the world, because your more wrapped up in the personal dramas. It reads much more like fanfic or a TV show than a novel, which I don't mind 95% of the time.
The premise and worldbuilding had me hooked from the beginning and then kind of failed to keep me there, or continue to expand or even explain things at time. I feel that this booked suffered from having a MASSIVE amount of interesting things going on but too many at the same time that none of them felt fully fleshed out or used to their full potential. I feel like I knew next to nothing about Reina because she was ignored half the book, Callum could have been infinitely more interesting and compelling if he would have spent less time being annoying, and a billion other stories felt very so exciting, but left to the side because we had to move on to the next characters bit.
Ultimately though, I did really enjoyed it a lot, the characters keep it interesting, the transitions between characters and the moments or realization a character has about another during their POV are always compelling.
But honestly, I read this book because someone said it had the best threesome scene they had read in it. It did not disappoint, though it would've been rated M not E if we are talking typical AO3 Rules. 10/10 smut.

The hype lead me here, but all I can say is that I think this book was trying to hard to be something grand. A lot needs to be tightened up - it just kept going in circles, filled with redundancies rather than fleshing-out the characterization or world-building that was deeply needed. That being said, it was good enough that I'll continue with the series to see where it leads.

I had to force myself to finish this and I am exhausted. There is just so much without anything at the same time. The sentences are wordy and over the top in a way that is heavy and clunky. Instead of saying “she was shocked by his reply”, the text is that “she was aghast at the perversion of the transaction.” Just… why? Everything simple that should be easy and flows is so over the top that it falls flat beneath the weight of its self.

There is no immersion into this world. My eyes kept jumping forward begging it to be over with faster. I would reread sentences several times and still be confused in the next paragraph.

Interesting characters were largely ignored and the uninteresting characters were heavily focused on. The artwork, though beautiful, strangely did not match the characters each section was named for, which didn’t make sense to me.

It felt like whole chapters were missing and the ones that were there dragged on forever and a day. Anything interesting was just simply dropped the next page in infuriating regularity. The last two chapters of the book seemed like they were written for another work entirely, in that they were interesting and actually held my attention.

To go from talking in tiring detail about the complexities of stopping time to calling someone a useless fuckboi just because they could in the next sentence was jarring and not in a way to bring humor or relief from the vast complexities the text tried and failed to reach.

The concept was super cool and I wanted to love this book, but unfortunately, I did not.
