One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

A simple story of a day in the life of a prisoner in a gulag. It doesn't really matter why he's there, but anyway he's there for escaping from an enemy POW camp and therefore being labeled a spy. It's an average day, nothing out of the ordinary happens, it's not sensationalist. I could see that Ivan Denisovich was able to be grateful for the small things, but that his years in the camps had diminished his life till it was just those small things. Heartbreaking.
