Sadly I really struggled with this. The writing was very juvenile/wattpad-like in the sense that the prose was incredibly clunky and the secondary characters were underdeveloped. There were lots of filler chapters which really dragged and then conflict was resolved unrealistically quickly over a couple of pages. The plot didn’t seem well thought out and I was confused by the quick ‘twist’ and ending. Characters would mysteriously disappear during a scene only to save the day a few pages later with no explanation - there were lots of moments when I thought ‘wait, weren’t you here the whole time’?? The immaturity of the dialogue made this book feel more middle-grade to me, however I can see why it’s aimed at an older audience because of the graphic/heavy themes. Overall, I’m just surprised this got through the editing stages given how under-edited it feels 😔

"Growth isn’t a deviation from what we’ve done before, but a natural progression to honor all those who make this community strong."

Why did I let this book sit on my shelves for 6 months before starting it? I'm so mad at past-Carrie because it was incredible. This was a beautiful YA story. Every time Yadriel was misgendered I was ready to throw hands. 😡 Seeing him go through this journey was fantastic. I laughed, I cried, and I got mad at fictional characters... but I also cheered so hard for other fictional characters. This was everything I wanted from a paranormal YA.

I forgot how much I love paranormal romances 🥲 I loved all the characters and all the important topics Thomas was able to seamlessly include in the story. Even though I was able to predict the ending pretty early on and the ending was a little too perfect, I still enjoyed it. I highly recommend the audio book, as Roque does a phenomenal job of narrating, and the bonus interview with Thomas at the end is so lovely. I love #Yadrian!!

Loved the representation, loved the story. The plot was engaging, the characters were well developed and very lovable. The romance at the end is so so freaking cute, they made me so happy. I LOVE TRANS MAIN CHARACTERS ❤️

An astounding book with no shortage of heart-wrenching teen drama. Yadriel is a brujo, one of the male members of a necromantic tradition stretching back to pre-colonial Central America. He is also transgender and accidentally falls in love with the first spirit he raises, Julian. With the backdrop of a mysterious death in the brujo community and the possibility that Julian's death is linked, I literally burned the midnight oil to read the end of this book.
