This was fun, but I didn't find I enjoyed it as much as I've enjoyed others in this series, probably because I felt like too much and not enough was happening all at the same time. I do feel that this book could have been 30 pages longer with added details and a bit more realism (yes, I'm aware it's a book about vampires) and it would have gone a long way towards getting 4-stars.

I'm big into the vampire hunter falling for a vampire trope because I'm trash and a sucker for anything that reminds me of Buffy. Honestly, I think it would've been truly hilarious if Quinn and Rashel just were constantly trying to murder each other but at the very last second can't go through with it. I wish this book was longer for that reason, it would've made their relationship that much better to read about. Overall, I really like these books. They're short and fun to read but I wish they were longer and more fleshed out. (

Again this wasn’t a mind blowing book, but it was an entertaining one that only took me 2-3h in total to finish. I will say though, that I did enjoy the last one just a bit better than this one in terms of the plot (like the whole popularity and gaining confidence parts), while I enjoyed the little amounts of romance in this although it did feel rushed (I mean there’s only 200 pages).

Fairly standard installment of the Night World series.

Spoiler Soulmate principle between two teenagers who shouldn't be together due to Night World laws: check.

Dead parents: check.

Progression of Circle Daybreak: check.

We meet Hunter, Dove and Garnet (briefly), and Lily Redfern here, as well as Quinn who we met briefly in Daughters of Darkness. His story is pretty interesting, as a colonial American, but I wish the story would have gone into that more.

Traumatizing factors I'm not sure I'd let an early teen read (check my reviews of the earlier books in the series to see their traumatizing factors): Dead parents. Witnessing violent murder of family members. Child abduction. Human trafficking/captivity.

The climax was actually quite good this time around. I was uneasy reading through the escape off the island and the subsequent fire. And there was a quote that I loved... the first quote I've written down for the Night World series:

"They were each holding a rock or a piece of wood broken from the jagged pilings of the wharf. They were going to help me, Rashel thought."

I could just so clearly picture these poor girls, standing there in the dark, dirty and terrified and drugged, and ready to fight together. It was really beautiful.

Overall, I'd honestly really love to get back to some witches, and hopefully some history!

This is my favorite Night World story so far! It was interesting and captivating. I loved all of the characters, especially Quinn and Rashel. I wish we had gotten a little better look at what happens to Timmy and Nyala though.
