I think for me personally this was a book that I could not stomach at times? It’s hard to want to pick up a book when you have problems with every character. Nadine was the only redeemable character for me and she’s not given a damn CHANCE. Do not go into this hoping for a fun lottery induced happy ending.

I loved this book. I think fans of Kevin Wilson or Tom Robbins will also love it. It has the same, off center, slightly quirky view of a nonetheless grounded reality those other two writers' work possesses. The tragedy, and there are a couple truly tragic events, are handled without melodrama, just a straight telling of what happened. All the characters are real individuals. At first, the narrator bothered me, but then I realized her slightly sardonic, flat reading was precisely what the story needed. I'm a huge fan of this book.

I loved it until the last couple chapters. I can’t believe I read all that and got so invested just for it to end like it did. Maybe that’s part of the point, but I just desperately wanted something good for these characters, and it never truly came.

There are also MANY blatant continuity errors throughout the book.

This book pulls off the amazing feat of being really charming while involving some incredibly painful things. It’s like the author gives you a silly, beloved, beat-up stuffed animal to hold while you go through this dark stuff with the characters. Also…I feel like you get to watch them, in different ways, harm and also maybe save each other…which feels really beautifully HUMAN.
