The only reason I took off a quarter star is because the book could already use a 3rd edition. I definitely recommend reading this edition over the 1st if you can. A few things were said about non-binary identities I didn’t exactly agree with. Probably two sentences out of the entire book that is otherwise a very moving experience to read as a young trans person. I wanted to better understand my place in the world and the people and events that came before me and now I feel that I have. It’s a humbling reading experience, personally anyways. I’d recommend this to any queer or trans person especially but really anyone who just wanted to get a trans historian’s history of trans people in America.

Transgender History compiles the history of transgender identities as well as the importance of including transgender people in modern-day activism. This was my first experience with feminist/queer literature, and I really have not looked back since. This book introduced me to a wonderful movement and complex history that means a lot to me even today. Since the latest addition was released in 2017, it could be somewhat outdated, but I still think it is a good introduction if you want to learn more about trans history.

This book read more like a high school textbook so I struggled to get through parts of it, but the resources (websites, laws, etc) mentioned were vital for me to know about. Also, there were many incidents and law cases that were shared in this book that I didn’t know about.

Read during the #TransRightsReadathon. A good overview, updated in 2017, of trans history from the 1950s on. It focuses on human rights and social justice in historical social context, but does include some scientific/medical history as well. The glossary at the beginning is useful, but be advised, as the author points out, that language can change rapidly, so it should be a starting point and guide to understanding the terminology used in the book rather than a definitive source for current usage.

This is my hundredth book of the year!! I started it sooo long ago, I take so long to read non-fiction physical books!

It was excellent though, I learnt some stuff, realized TERFs have been using the same tired arguments for way longer than I thought, and it deepened my pride and determination as a queer activist and LGBT+ centre volunteer. I WISH there were queer history books about French queer history but I can't really find any, so I'll read all the US and UK one instead.

Overall excellent and informative, but the first 40-pages chapter full of definitions made me put it down for a while. It's also very academic so not a *good* time or *fun* time but it's full of information. I knew about a decent number of events mentionned because of assignements I did on US queer history but I still learnt stuff especially since I'm young and it's not my country's politics.
