A great book about the modern history of China, told through three generations of a family. The quality of writing is not amazing, but still a fairly good book.

Dos livros mais impactantes que já li na minha vida. Uma leitura em que tive constantemente vontade de chorar e gritar de raiva. Conhecemos a história real de Jung Chang e a sua família, através de gerações, com destaque para a sua avó e a sua mãe: três cisnes selvagens, três mulheres de força, três grandes exemplos de coragem. O contexto histórico é riquíssimo, extremamente completo e interessante, mas igualmente chocante. Engoli tantas vezes em seco. Respirei fundo outras tantas vezes. É difícil descrever o quanto este livro mexeu comigo, especialmente por se tratarem de factos reais. A minha ignorância para com a história da China fez com que toda a informação que absorvi tivesse maior impacto. Tenho vontade de ler mais, de aprender mais, de saber mais. É inimaginável o tamanho sofrimento desta família e dos milhões de chineses que viveram durante o regime de Mao. A revolução cultural foi um marco muito triste e cruel da história deste país tão vasto, tão grande. Desde 1909 compreendemos como chegamos à China comunista, como a vida das pessoas consegue mudar num abrir e fechar de olhos quando se tem a pessoa errada no poder. Este livro deveria ser de leitura obrigatória.
