Really good book, highly recommend if you're interested in the opioid topic.

the DRAMA of this book is really what i stayed around for. i've read several other books about the opioid crisis and this book didn't delve into any new information for me, but i really really enjoyed the drama and heartbreak of the people the book was written about. almost everyone in this story is a horrible person, but it makes it kinda fun

Written a few years ago, before nationwide attention was paid to the opioid crisis outside of affected areas, American Pain takes a look at the nether region between supply (pharmaceutical companies) and demand (users, most of whom began with legitimate pain problems) to focus on the operators of several pill mills in Florida who took advantage of giant loopholes and laws that lacked an understanding of addiction to create an empire built on poor addicts. Meticulously referenced with corporate documents, the products of federal investigations, and personal interviews, the book reads like a thriller but is all-t00-factual.
