Much better than the first one

I guess I'm hooked on another Sheila Connolly series. This mystery was intriguing, unlike the first. The characters are better developed and the story more endearing.

This book was good but not great, I felt too much time was spent all minute details of apple farming, and not enough time trying to figure out who the killer was. I will try the next book in the series.

"Oh man, I can't f__king believe this. Another basement, another elevator. How can the same sh_t happen to the same guy twice?"
-John McClane (Die Hard 2)

After solving the murder of her ex-boyfriend in book 1, One Bad Apple, Meg Corey could be forgiven for thinking that things would settle down and she would be able to turn her attention to making a go of the apple orchard.

Unfortunately, weeks after one crime is solved, another body has shown up on her orchard. A young environmental activist has been murdered. The method of murder, pesticide poisoning. With the State Police eager, nay desperate to hang the crime on her, she needs to investigate and find the real killer.

It's OK. It's even good. I nice way to kill some time for lovers of cosy mysteries. It follows the same basic pattern as the first book and no doubt, book three which I just bought, but it's a pattern I quite enjoy. Not sure how long before I get tired of it, but for now it's good fun.

Really loved the character aspect and the setting up of Meg’s new life at the orchard but wasn’t a big fan of the mystery. The ending was good. I look forward to reading more books in this series!

Part of my March Madness 2022 to work on my physical TBR pile (which seems like it's never-ending).

I enjoyed this book and I'm finding this is a series I can really sink my teeth into, no pun intended. Our fish-out-of-water protagonist Meg Corey is settling in her new hometown of Granford, renovating her Colonial-era home and getting her apple orchard ready for the spring. She seems more interested in her home renovation/restoration than her orchard, but I will put that down to the time of year and that harvest is several months away.

The characters are well-rounded and I feel these would be people I would like to know in real life. Lots of great information added in the book regarding small farms, apples, and home renovation/restoration and it feels natural for the info to be in the book, not as if placed there. The murderer was a bit obvious but that didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story.

This book is set in Western MA, in the Pioneer Valley, in the fictional town of Granford. I happen to have lived in the Pioneer Valley all of my life, and am right down Route 9 from UMASS Amherst and the Cold Spring Orchard in Belchertown where the students do all of their work, just like the students in this book. I enjoyed all of the nods to places I have been and sights that I recognized.

The book was a bit slow to start for me, but as it moved towards the final third I started to enjoy Meg, Seth, and Bree. I also liked reading about the animals and the renovations to her farmhouse. The mystery itself took a bit to engage me, and the killer was a tad obvious, but still a decent ending. I would read more in this series.

This book was enjoyable. I did not feel like it was something I had to read without stopping, but when I stopped I did not feel like I did not want to finish either. I just took my time with it. My thoughts, in no particular order: it's about time Meg and Seth acknowledged that was going on between them! There needs to be more Rachel. I'm not sure how I feel about Christopher now that he is working with the chemical company. Bree took a while to warm up, but I think she will add to the story nicely. Daphne was a bit obvious, but listening to her retelling of her side of the events was chilling; she was absolutely remorseless. I like this series and will be reading more.
