This is the kind of book that makes me remember why I withhold 5 star reviews. Every once in a while a gem comes along that REALLY earned it - this is one of those. Love, love, love it.

I bought this book because I wanted a big fat epic story scanning decades and really rated The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. I have to say that I nearly gave up on it a number of times in the first third of the novel because there were times when it was simply too farcical and read like an eccentric 50s drama. I can't say how relieved I am that I persevered because in the last two thirds I got what I craved and loved it. I don't want to give anything away but it was charming, funny, sad... and I would be very happy to put in in the hands of many readers.

I went into this book with high expectations. It was recommended by so many people. I liked all the characters and was interested in the plot, but it just wasn’t as great as I had expected.

Was totally gripped by this. Don't normally go for long books but this was recommended by a friend and I loved it. Proper saga that has you completely embroiled in the protagonist's life.

Wow. This book was incredible. At one point I was thinking about it while in public and staring at everyone’s faces thinking about their lives, their joy and pain, and started crying. The witty conversations were so skillfully written and I felt very immersed in Cyril and his community. There were a couple forgivable author mistakes among the life journey and some pretty unbelievable life events and coincidences, but who cares. It was an amazing story and every bit such a joy to read.

A saga (defined by google as "a long, involved story, account, or series of incidents") of the life and times of an Irish man and the people who surround him throughout his life. An engrossing story of prejudice, discrimination, politics, love, and loss.
