each of these stories was like a shot to the head. or getting your heart ripped out. feel like everyone describes them in that violent sort of way but it's true. had to stop and stare out the window for a while after finishing each one

Picked up this short collection from the library after one of his new yorker short stories hooked me. It's a bit like Carver meets Burroughs meets Bukowski. Vivid, almost sporadic, descriptions of an aging, yet vibrant, America is coupled by the minimalist and dialogue-driven verse of the stories... these stories have good range; the setting may be as simple as a lonely Midwestern town after last call, to something more tense in a protested abortion clinic. The narrator deals with alcoholism on the verge of collapse, while desperately holding onto a more innocent age.

I love these stories, but I'm at a total loss to explain intelligently why. They're just...good.
