I found the book to be very exciting, perhaps because it was originally released in 12 instalments. There seemed to be a cliffhanger at the end of each chapter.
I enjoyed the look into the seedy side of the Saint Petersburg of Dostoyevsky’s time. However, I think the censorship and morality of the magazine publisher, whom this was written for, have made an effect on the story. At some points, I was confused as to Raskolnikov’s motives and struggled to see his character as being fully formed.
All in all, a great book. There’s so many excellent articles on this work, and such a range of interesting psychological interpretations. Certainly a worthwhile read.
