Glorious illustrations, compelling characters and rich world. Hugely complex, I'm glad for the back-of-book synopses (it took me a long time to sink back into it after a long hiatus).

Solid, calmer part where we learned some new things about Maika and the little fox. Keep getting much more interesting.

Last year I read Volume 3 and remember feeling relatively lukewarm. Maybe it was 2020 that colored my perception of the last volume. Who knows. I was worried I wouldn't be as interested in these graphic novels but then I read Volume 4 and I'm happy to report that Monstress is still one of my favorite graphic novels ever. I absolutely loved Malika's character development and the way her backstory is slowly unlayered overtime. F--k her dad, by the way. Glad my child, Kippa, is safe.

2020 reread. There is so much to keep track of in this series, but it is so worth it. Lush, intricate, complex, dark, and utterly fantastic--the various factions of the world of Monstress brace for war and a fight that will decide the survival of all.

_____

This team of creators continues to produce one of the most intricate, beautiful, unsettling, rich comics I've ever encountered. With with machinations and worldbuilding to match any fantasy novel, "The Chosen" sees the world reeling from disaster and poised on the brink of chaos. The factions are forming, lines are being drawn, and there are few left in the world who believe that peace is still possible.

There are moments of difficulty in reading this series that mostly come from the gaps of time between volumes. There's quite a lot to keep track of, but the writing does an effective job of moving steadily forward while reminding the reader of what has come before.

And the art. There are not enough good things to say about the art in this series. In every regard, Monstress is a masterwork achievement.

Pretty art doesn't make up for an overly long-winded and draggy story with far too many characters I don't really care about. I'm still along for the ride, but losing interest.

A lot of things that sold me on these comics remain strong: the fiery and unapologetically ruthless female lead; the evocative and original art; the detailed and imaginative world-building. However, in some ways I find the story is so complex that it doesn't actually lend itself to the graphic form: it's constantly a challenge to figure out what's happening and who is who. I feel like I need to take notes! That being said, I enjoyed this volume, and found it an intriguing mixture of aesthetically pleasing and extremely gross.
