I started out not liking this book for being too edgy for my personal taste, and finished up disliking it because of the lack of conclusion. From the beginning I felt like I was starting in the middle of something and missing context, and I didn't get satisfactory answers by reading on. There was even a prophecy--I love a good prophecy--that only about 1/3 of it happens in the story. There's an interesting story in this world and this premise, but I'm not convinced it's the one I just read.

This book is a very clear example to me that sometimes you just need to take some time before reading a book.

I tried reading this when it was relatively new, and my brain just didn't connect with it at all.. and yet, this time around it's hitting all my likes, and I've completely fallen in love with the characters!

the book is really well written and I'm having a grand time with them. I definitely see myself rereading them when the next books come out!

I can see how this is a recommendation for fans of Everina Maxwell's romantic space sci-fi - there is banter, there is sexual tension, there is rollickin adventure with things-are-more-dangerous-than-they-appear plot twists. However, this is a much darker story, both with people's cruelty towards one another, and with the ghoulishly grotesque. I wish there had been a content warning (like Maxwell's and other books), since the abuse and PTSD is horrifying. The ghoulish grotesquerie read like an adult version of Garth Nix's Sabriel books, if you have an active imagination it is going to be a disgusting visual read in your mind, but if you can handle that, or blur the goopy gore, it's manageable. Plus the action is so thrilling you might just be turning the pages too fast. PLUS, the key words are just too fun: Tarot themed lords and thrones, Atlantis (surprise, humans, magic has been here all along and it's TERRIFYING, like Robin McKinley's Sunshine), sigils and tattoos, "oh there's just the one bed"  (because you need to throw the romance fans a trope bone). Apparently this could be a long series?? Normally I wait for series to be completed (I forget things, I can't be rereading too many books at each pub date), but for this, I will read whatever comes next as it comes. Although only when I have the hours to stay up late reading and when my heart can handle the trauma.

Really interesting worldbuilding and many plots weaved throughout. The characters were all really unique and intriguing and I liked the range of relationships that were at the forefront of this book. Excited to read the rest of the series. Some of the twists were a bit predictable and the language a bit clunky at times, which is why it's not 5 stars for me

For a book so incredibly dense with action and heavy, deep world building, it felt like glimpsing a city through the window of a bullet train: fast enough for glimpses, rushing from one thing to the next.

I never got bored, but there was so much information and things moving, getting picked up and put down and thrown around, that it's a mystery I ended up finishing this book calmly instead of annoyed by all the loose ends. If anything, Last Sun feels like the longest prologue ever to an action-urban fantasy series.

Still, though fast-paced narrative usually isn't for me, I'm tempted to know what happens next. I like the characters, as quick as I had to be to learn them all (and there are A Lot). Brand is my favorite.
