I picked this book out of a stack of free digital books, and was really excited to try this author's work. And... you know... dragons. :P

I adored the beginning. It was strong, engaging, and Imari's uniqueness in a diverse world really sang off the page. However, after apprentice Amari left the city, the voice of the story seemed to change. It got rougher. Almost younger and a little rushed. Around 24% the voice of the story changed again to something older and almost formal. These were really subtle shifts, but enough to sideline me from the story and lose the immersion.

Readers who love simpler YA dragon stories may love this tale. In the end, I think I just didn't connect as much as I'd hoped to. DNF at 25%.
