“Island of the Sequined Love Nun” kicked off my Christopher Moore phase. I had read “Dirty Job,” and just thought it was OK, but this novel really showed me what Moore could do. It is my favorite book by Moore so far. It’s funny, dark and fast-paced — really everything I look for in a book. If you haven’t read any Moore, start with this one.

This is the story of Tucker Case.  Tucker was a pilot for a big cosmetic company - that is until he wrecked on of the company's planes while drunk.  Unemployed, and without a pilot's license, Tucker is desparate to work.  He receives a suspicious letter from a missionary in Micronesia who knows who he is, but wants him to fly for them anyway.  The job would pay enormously well - flying medical supplies for 2 years.  Tucker - being desparate - accepts the job, and thus sets off on a whirlwind journey on this small island.  The medical supplies are suspicious, the work of the missionaries is shady.  Tucker plans on getting to the bottom of what is going on, and works to redeem himself by helping the people of Micronesia.

This is a cute book.  IT is silly and an easy read, and it really passed the 16 hours I had traveling in the car.  The audiobook version was a good one - the reader was excellent.  It really help my attention.  I enjoyed it and I hope to read a few more books by this author in the future.

How this book escaped my radar for so long I’ll never know but this absurdist romp through the South Pacific was much in the same vein as [b:The Sex Lives of Cannibals: Adrift in the Equatorial Pacific|11077|The Sex Lives of Cannibals Adrift in the Equatorial Pacific|J. Maarten Troost|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1386924418s/11077.jpg|713460], but while the Moore’s book is fiction and Sex Lives isn't, Island of the Sequined Love Nun is so rooted in reality that that’s where the joy in reading this came from for me. If you’ve spent any time with people who live on dots in the Pacific you’ll know the truth behind this fiction as well.

If you can stomach crude satire you’ll laugh-out loud too at this tale concerning cargo cults, talking fruit bats, the Shark People of Alualu, + so much more. There’s also an all too true message here about the exploitation of Pacific Islanders (though not in the way central to this novel, that I’ve heard of…) In reading the acknowledgements I learned about all the time that Moore spent in Micronesia and Melanesia which isn’t a surprise to me at all since so much of this read induced a ‘yep that could totally happen there’ reaction from myself.

Keeping this review as vague as possible since the comedy of errors from page one until the last is what will have you unwilling to ever put this read down.
