Early in the series, Iron Man says, "I'm getting tired of end of the world scenarios."

I feel ya, Tony.

There's a lot going on in this event, but character takes a back seat, so it all comes off a bit as sound and fury signifying nothing.

Big daring event with a real grandeur to it. Hickman's use of narration and of repeating events with slightly different perspectives makes everything feel massive and important

Only problem I had is when I got to a Deodato issue - his art is lifeless and low effort.

This was part two in my quest of preparation for the MCU's Infinity War. It's my understanding that they will not be drawing inspiration from Infinity Gauntlet alone, but also Hickman's Infinity, a more recent work.

Now first of all, I did not read all of the comics that are compiled in this edition that I'm reviewing. I read only the six issues that make up the Infinity event. I did this purely based on the time I had available before seeing the movie, because I am most definitely interested in reading Hickman's run on both Avengers and New Avengers. Ever since I started reading his Sci-Fi comic through Image, East of West, I've wanted to dive into his Marvel runs. Not only that, but I think that reading through those will give me a much better understanding of who some characters/entities are in the Infinity event; namely the Builders and Ex Nihilo.

So, Infinity. Thanos and his Cull Obsidian (the Black Order) come a knockin' on Earth's front door. Disguised as the need for a 'tribute', Thanos seeks his only remaining son. The cast is enormous in this, and filled with plenty of heroes (and even entire groups) that I'm unfamiliar with. For example, The Shi'ar Imperial Guard, the Skrull and Kree, the Builders as I'd mentioned before, the Inhumans (who I've heard of but know little to nothing about). There are many players in this game, and many of them are not of Earth. I find myself wondering how much I would know of these characters had I read through Hickman's other runs, and how much comes from a previously established understanding of the Marvel universe. In any case, there are lots of interesting characters on screen. Both familiar and unfamiliar. Combine some solid Hickman writing with some excellent art by Jerome Opena and Jim Cheung (Opena especially stood out to me) and you have a fun comic. It definitely has me in the mood to watch the movie.

You have to be familiar with Avengers in 2013-2014 to appreciate this epic event

Most of these gigantic crossover stories explain everything pretty well, whereas Infinity just keeps piling on cosmic layers and villains until you've completely lost track of why anything is happening. It's really two stories just sort of jammed together, and I think each would be better off as a separate book. Thanos' invasion of Earth would be the more interesting story but frankly it serves as filler to make the "worlds are being destroyed but also the universe is being destroyed" story longer.

4.5 stars. Although because of this panel, I am actually giving it a 5.

description

I mean really - Thor laying the beat-down on Thanos...!? I swear if I wasn't a manly man I would have squealed when I saw that panel.

*spoiler*I squealed like a bitch!*spoiler*

The big Marvel events scare me. I hate buying into the hype only to be let down on the execution. I hate cash grabs and lackluster storylines. Really...I just hate water downed, redundant, empty bullshit! Thankfully, Infinity not only delivered a good reading experience, but it more or less gave me a cosmic smack upside my head and filled me up on my sci-fi, epic, spacey, goodness fix!

However, to be fair, to properly enjoy this event you really do need to read Avengers and The New Avengers alongside it to get the full scope of things. I normally harp and whine about how the 'Big Two' always make us buy multiple books to fully enjoy a story, but in the case of Infinity, well, both of those Avengers titles were freaking awesome so I am willing to overlook this.

It doesn't get a heck of a lot more dire than what is going on with Infinity! Earth is being threatened on so many fronts that it's kind of hard to see any way out of its predicament(s). Big, bad-ass, invincible(nearly) scary dudes are in space trying to stir up shit. Thanos is on Earth being a dick and trashing everything he can, and alternate universes are colliding threatening the end of...well...everything.

The destruction of entire planets, desperate space battles, sinister team-ups, wicked villains, political machinations, and some seriously kick-ass battle theaters! This book delivered in spades. Not even to mention the cast of characters rolled into all of this! I loved how eclectic the amalgamation of heroes and villains were. I mean really - how cool is Ebony Maw? Love that character and that's just one example of many.

Anyways...YAY MARVEL. You have given me the exact kind of Superhero story I was hoping for with this one and you have accomplished your goal in making me a regular reader of both of your Avengers books, as well as hooking me in for the Secret Wars event coming this summer.

Well played.
