Set in Glasgow, this series teams up a fledgling female private detective (Jasmine Sharp) and an experienced police detective Catherine McLeod. The setting is as much a character as the people, and Brookmyre approaches the story from all angles--keeping you guessing and caring all along the way. I'm intrigued to see where the series goes from here. Jasmine's character could easily have become annoying, but there's a genuineness that keeps her fresh. I also appreciated how the action starts on page one and keeps pace throughout.

Despite the ratings, I find Brookmyre to be hit and miss for me; unfortunately, this one was a miss. I just couldn't seem to get into it. I may try another one another day.

Ok the slang in this is impossible and do scottish people really call women hen so much?
Or is that like aussies are meant to call women shelia all the time.

A fairly palatable crime thriller but not my normal reading. Fast paced and easy reading - nothing too challenging to think about.

Enjoyable enough to read book 2.

I dated this as 3 stars, only because I didn't find it as really riveting. The two, seemingly unrelated, storylines kept me wondering when they would merge. Instead of adding to the mystery I found it to be a bit distracting. The storyline(s) formed a complex, realistic mystery where the good guys/bad guys wasn't a clear black and white. The ending was in some ways as fulfilling as real life. I loved the author's use of language. I will read the next book in the series to see Jasmine's continued growth.
