I loved this book, but wanted more of the mother’s past storyline. I loved every connection and reflection and it felt a little unbalanced without more of her story. Interestingly, I had just seen a statistic about home more people in Pakistan speak Punjabi rather than Urdu, which I didn’t know, so it was really cool to have that be true in this book just a few days later. I liked how this book handled explanatory commas - phrases in Punjabi or Urdu are simply translated or there is a remark about how there is no equivalent, but it’s done in a stream of consciousness or conversational way that doesn’t feel heavy handed. People not familiar with the languages won’t be lost, but people who are familiar won’t feel like the flow is interrupted. It’s a hard line to walk and I liked how this author managed it.
Moderate: Addiction, Alcoholism, Child abuse, Chronic illness, Death, Domestic abuse, Drug abuse, Drug use, Emotional abuse, Physical abuse, Racism, Blood, Medical content, Grief, Death of parent, Alcohol, Colonisation, and Classism
