I enjoyed this volume more than I did the last time I read it, when I was 15 and sick

The whole volume had momentum that was Dick moving to Chicago, then it was all undone in the last issue. So what was the point of the whole of "Dick in Chicago"? It seemed like filler because they didn't know what to do with Nightwing, until they could send him off to be Grayson, Super Sexy Super Spy. I hope this gives Nightwing some purpose. He's been kind of adrift since the Court of Owls business.

I do love a little Dick and Babs flirtation.

While this volume was still somewhat enjoyable, it was mostly weak. However, I love everything Dick Grayson, so of course I still enjoyed it.

The first issue I think is it being set in Chicago. I still don't understand the point of that. Isn't Bludhaven corrupt enough? Why go to another corrupt city? The same exact story could have been told in Bludhaven.

I also don't see why Higgins thought Dick would have been struggling. I mean, come on, do you really think Bruce or Alfred wouldn't send Dick money? I understand Dick wanting independence, but you know Alfred would have made sure Dick was able to have an apartment of his own (because there are serious problems rooming with somebody when you have a secret identity, as evident by this volume. Sure it was fun to read about, but I have a hard time believing Bruce and Alfred wouldn't have done something about it.)

The last issue was also really weak. While I do know what happened in Forever Evil, I haven't actually read it yet. I was expecting a little more of a tie in between the stories, but 29 takes place way before Forever Evil and 30 takes place after, so there is a massive jump between the two. If you happened to not read Forever Evil and just Nightwing without knowing what had happened in Forever Evil, it would have been really disorientating. There needed to be just a little more tie-in.

I really loved the art for Nightwing. It was so smooth and fluid. But the art for Dick was not good. There were clearly different artists throughout all of the issues and it started to get really annoying, that lack of consistency. Especially since everyone who did the line art for all of Dick's parts just could not agree on what Dick looked like; some gave him a really broad jaw and chin while others gave him a pointy chin, some gave him really big eyes while others didn't, and I don't even want to talk about the mess that was his hair in issue 29. But the line art when it was Nightwing was absolutely fantastic. So I just wish we could have seen more of that artist.

The Marionette storyline didn't feel resolved. I imagine Higgins had planned more for her but then got smacked in the face with Forever Evil and had to abandon her story.

Mostly, I feel like this book was struggling with the fact that the creators knew it was going to end soon. It just was not a satisfying end. (Especially issue 30. What was with Dick and Bruce beating each other to bloody pulps while wearing their masks, but no shirts?) I'm hoping Grayson will be better. Still, I am sad to see Nightwing go. Maybe Dick will get to return to the mantle some day.

I guess this was fun?

Its a collection of short stories like one set in zero year when Dick went to Gotham to watch some movie and the lights down and how he fought against Amygdala with his friends and all that entailed there plus moving out to Gotham and a team up with Batgirl to take down Firefly ( a fun twist on the villain btw) and the "Will they, won't they" tension being apparent and I love the drama specially now.. considering his present status quo with her in Infinite frontier!

So yeah a fun story and then in Chicago, trying to fight off against Marionette and Mad hatter and how the two are connected and it makes for a solid read for sure!

But the best one was the coming of Zsasz and what dick does to save this girl whose parents were killed by the villain and its a tale of inspiration and hope and seeing Dick in that view was amazing!
And what seemed like a final goodbye from the writer in this run as he had to pack it all up after forever evil where something big happens to Dick and before the Spyral agent saga!

So yeah overall a fun read and an amazing ending though my biggest gripe is so many plots were abandoned later and never addressed but oh well, good art throughout and a great read! A definite ending to a great series overall!
