2.5/5 — The Black Album is an okay novel, but very of it’s time. Very much part of that mid-90s Trainspottingesque lifestyle. Whilst it was interesting that Kureishi matched that with Islamic Fundamentalism, I do think that, particularly since the turn of the millennium and post-9/11, there are many more contemporary novels that deal with Religious Fundamentalism in a much more nuanced fashion and in a less male-heavy hedonistic fashion.

an interesting take. one can reflect on religion and what power it holds over certain communities, while the humour and the British bluntness plays in the background. characters seem to all be flawed, but isn’t it the human form? to be flawed, but still be loved by someone. however, the ending didn’t seem to connect all the dots and plots of the story.

Kinda loses its way and becomes a bit too didactic in the final stretch but otherwise this is wonderful. Some interesting ideas about identity and youth, and a great LONDON novel

There were some parts I heavily enjoyed and others that had me feeling a little wishy-washy. I’ll absolutely be rereading in a few months for class so I’ll likely update my review then (-:
Graphic: Drug abuse, Drug use, Misogyny, Racial slurs, Racism, and Xenophobia
Moderate: Cursing, Hate crime, Homophobia, Sexism, Islamophobia, Religious bigotry, and Injury/Injury detail
