the first book and this both have the same issues. both women had the same insecurity of being a "commoner" but i feel like h in this had waaaaay more of a reason not to trust the H. i dont think that part was handle well. i need there to be chemistry and some showing of a relationship building. they kept saying they saw the "real" them (like the first book) but they barely talked or hung out. instead i got the author telling me their thoughts changing without us seeing it. the similarities really made this seem a lot worse but i finished it so it cant be that bad.... lol jk i was irritated at the end

Another book goes into the fine pile. The characters are fine. The story is fine. It is all fine. There was no zing or fire or spark.
It is not terrible and I would recommend it to someone who enjoys historical romance with a no traditional heroine. She is a playwright. He is a marquess? An Earl? Some type of rake.
When this author hits the right notes for me, I love her books. When she doesn’t, they are just fine.
The frustration with fine is that I will not remember the story in a month.

I really liked this book but that ending was cringe and terrible. Why ruin such a great book - and a great character - by having him propose to her on her most important day...in front of an audience?!? I wouldn't have believed this character capable of such terrible behaviour. The whole time it was all about how independent and great she is, how much he respects her, and them *boom* destroyed in the last half hour of the book. It's like the opposite of character development.

The rest of the book is great and I'm trying not to punish the whole book for how it ended. I like that it has a mature take on his "raking", that yes he has slept around but who cares? Not a big deal. I love that there's no emphasis on virginity and he doesn't care.

I actually found the opposite characterizations from Forever Your Earl in this one. Maggie felt a bit flat, never fully rounded out. She was so angry for so long and then all of a sudden her anger was gone, which felt weird and abrupt to me. Marwood, however, is the best kind of rake, charming, affable, and everyone's friend. But he's also secretly a theater geek, and I love rakes with hidden depths.
