CW: sexual assault, domestic abuse

Bree Prescott set out on the road in hopes of finding peace. Recently, her father had been murdered during a robbery and she was sexually assaulted by the criminal. Bree could not stop reliving the events of that night. She wanted a change of scenery, so she set out for a place with happy memories from her childhood. Bree rented a cabin on the lake for a couple of weeks. Her plan was to find a job and enjoy the quiet of the small town. She found a job quickly and started to make a couple of friends. She met a man her first day when he helped her pick up some items she had dropped. He didn't speak to her, but was helpful and quiet. When she asked about him, she was told he was Archer Hale. He was unable to speak due to an accident as a child and kept to himself. Bree rode her bike past his property when she was heading to the beach near her cabin. She couldn't stop thinking about him.

Archer Hale was part of the family who ran the small town. One of his uncles inherited the deed to the property most of the town sat on. His widow now controlled the town and his cousin was working toward becoming police chief. Archer had very little contact with that part of his family. As a young child, Archer lost his parents during a tragic event which also caused him to lose his ability to speak. He ended up living with his other uncle who was a recluse. That uncle died several years past and Archer was now alone. Whenever the townspeople saw him, most of the residents ignored him or said very little because they didn't know how to communicate with him. He missed having someone to spend time with. Bree caught his attention when he stopped to help her pick up her dropped items. She smiled at him and treated him like he was like everyone else. It had been a long time since someone had done that.

This story was sweet. Two broken people found a way to make each other whole again. Archer was someone who made Bree feel safe. She learned to trust again. Bree treated Archer as someone who was important. She could see that he was an intelligent and capable person who communicated differently from others. He could speak. Archer's voice was his hands. It was hard not to get angry with the people who were in Archer's life prior to the loss of his parents. They basically forgot about him and he suffered for that. Archer's life could have been so different if he had someone advocating for him. I enjoyed the slow realization of Bree and Archer's feelings for one another. The ending was very satisfying with a lovely epilogue.

I quite enjoyed the easy going writing style but I must say, that the story wasn’t as much to my liking. The intimate scenes were put quite randomly and at one point they didn’t add anything to the plot anymore. The plot itself was quite interesting but too dramatic for my taste.
Overall an okay book, which I sadly wouldn’t recommend a friend unless they are into niche and sad love stories.

this book was a rollercoaster, like i was happy then sad then happy then sad and it was so stressful but so worth it because reading archer and brees relationship was incredible.
Spoilerthe only thing i did not like about the book was travis' redemption arc after he was a slimeball for like most of the book

The writing style was just not for me. I feel like there were so many sex scenes that I couldn't enjoy the overall message of the book.
