I've noticed two things about Wiener's writing: one is that she often writes with the same themes, but each book is somehow totally different. The second is that there is a marked difference between her earlier stuff and her more recent books and I like her more recent work significantly more. This was a fairly solid read, though I found it dragged at times. I liked the characters and Wiener once again managed to create a heartbreaking narrative that totally pulls you in.

I liked a lot of Wiener's ideas around what it means to be a woman and how a lot of that meaning has evolved throughout history, while at the same time we seem to be facing a lot of the same challenges over and over again. I think sometimes she answered complex questions with simple answers, but I'm not too fussed, this wasn't a deep philosophical work, it was historical fiction on the edge of chick lit.

I saw someone on here say that this is a "3-star book with a 5-star message" and I wholeheartedly agree, so I'm meeting in the middle at 4 stars.

This novel follows two very different sisters from their picture perfect (but not really) childhood in the 1950s all the way up through the older sister's death in 2016. There are many predictable parts of this story, but it makes sense because their family could be ANYONE'S. So many parts of this story are relatable.

I think what I liked reading about most in this story was about the parenting relationships throughout the years. How parents are just trying their best, but they fail and then try again. It's heartbreaking and hopeful at the same time.
