In the second/third act of the book (I’m not sure) I was so absorbed. Once things all start coming together you can’t pull yourself away from it.
Graphic: Body horror, Death, Gore, and Grief
Moderate: Vomit, Violence, and Child death
Minor: Addiction, Animal death, and Panic attacks/disorders
You may not expect it but there is some pretty intense horror and body horror if you’re super weak stomachedemma_b_rhodes's review against another edition

What a wonderful, raw exploration of grief, community, and guilt. How avoiding deep pain doesn't make it disappear. It just gets a chance to linger and fester. I loved how Mackenzie, the main character, was deeply flawed.
A five of cups book at its core. Definitely want to reread this late October, when I think the pages will speak even more than they did now, at the start of spring.
Spoiler
Anxious, avoidant, pushing people away because she feels like a burden. Unable to ask for help. Falling into the trap that pretending you're okay is the same as not making your loved ones worried. Yet still loved by her family and friends. Because we all have our flaws, the bad.A five of cups book at its core. Warning, if you start this book, you will find it impossible to put down until you’ve finished it.
We are introduced to one of our main characters, Mackenzie (Mack), who returns home after noticing crows following her and having ominous dreams about her sister who passed away about a year ago. Upon her arrival, her dreams intensify and involve her cousins, leading them to uncover the nature of Sabrina’s death.
This book features themes of healing past trauma, passing on traditions from generation to generation, and finding your way back home, both physically and emotionally.
I was so captivated by Mackenzie’s story and her own journey of her grief. It’s hard to confront loss head on and that is an aspect of her character development throughout the book that I found very authentic.
