vivid!! this was vivid. more of a series of stories that sometimes overlap and interconnect, miguel street displayed a beautiful slice of life into the port of spain. the book felt so REAL. I could tell that the characters were based on real people and experiences, who had pains, struggles, and varying motivations. I don't know a lot about trinadad or it's culture in the 1960s, but this description was an incredible description of human life, that I easily learned so much.

this book took me a HOT minute to read but it was not the books fault. I am just a fool and a procrastinator.

I try and I try and I try with VS Naipaul and I just can’t seem to fall in love. So this is a serious case of it’s not you, it’s me. However, with Miguel Street, I liked it the best and found parts of it humorous, and dare I say in a few instances, even joyous. I enjoying reading the rhythm of Trinidadian speech and the ‘this is SO Caribbean’ vignettes that though set during WWII, are still very much on point today.

23 years later, I remembered next to nothing in this reread. I just knew back then that I really liked the book. Now I see why!! Truly fantastic. I would never wish to live in that era but boy was it spot on with Trinidad culture and the times. All the trigger warnings of today so normalised back then. This is definitely a book you need to read then reread shortly after.
