I have enjoyed Troy Soos’ Mickey Rawlings series for the well researched settings in early 20th century baseball. This short story does not feature Rawlings and is set some 20 years before Rawlings series at the inaugural games of the Temple Cup (a precursor to the World Series) in 1894 when the New York Giants face the Baltimore Orioles. The decision facing our umpire protagonist is how to respond to death threats and bribes made by gamblers wanting the series tipped in their betting favor. Good read..
