This was not at all what the book description leads you to believe. I struggled so hard to get through it. It became unbelievably graphic and unnecessarily so. None of the characters were likable or redeemable.

I didn't really enjoy this book at all. I first picked it up because I found it on a list of queer books. It definitely had some queer undertones, but the MC Lucy's voice/internal monologue and her actions to deal with her problems just grated on me so much. I think the only person (creature?) I kind of liked was Theo the merman and Dominic the dog. Dominic also deserved better.

Just wtf.  It was good on the emotional soul searching part but everything else was just too painful to read. Lucy is so so terrible and obviously a love addict who's ex boyfriend strung her along. She goes off the rails but not so totally that you can feel for her or excuse her.  The very graphic detailed sex scenes also felt unnecessary or just added for shock value.

This book was complicated. It explored a lot of what it means to be human. It was reflective for sure. It was ugly and it was beautiful. A little weird, but fun too.

Genuinely a laugh-out-loud funny read that is both heartbreaking and hopeful. With painfully relatable reflections on love, relationships, and sex Broder leaves us with the final question of ‘do we actually need love?’  A lot of realism and a bit of magic, this is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time.
