I really enjoyed this book. It was engaging and very well written.
Personally the ending felt too ‘happy’ or predictable which was slightly disappointing. However the first 3/4s of the book were gripping, full of great character development and Rooney tackled lots of interesting topics.

I couldn’t get behind the themes in the book. Pretty jarring self harm content, marital affairs, etc. The book was thought-provoking, but not what I love to read personally. On theme with S. Rooney.

4.25 or 4.5 (i can’t decide)
my first Sally Rooney book and i actually loved it. the writing is so good (i was not expecting that). it was a bit weird reading dialogues without quotations but got used to it fairly quickly. i was surprised to see a lot of negative reviews. however, the ending leaves me wanting more…

I think this book just left me feeling conflicted and confused. I’m not sure if that was the intention, but it’s made me feel uneasy, in a way, about relationships. The ending felt a little empty to me, but I’ve never been a fan of open endings like this. I so didn’t like Bobbie either, couldn’t stand her really :( but I won’t deny that I couldn’t put the book down, finished it in about three hours ish, couldn’t tear myself away from it!

After reading three Rooney books, I find all of her characters to be far too similar for my liking. I’m also sick of reading of how they’re so thin and sickly looking. It gets tiring.

It is a good story with interesting characters but I think thematically it lacks the maturity of Rooney’s other novels. This does make sense considering it’s her debut.

What the heck was that?? I’m left with open ended disappointment. There was an arc that just turned into a circle.
It was quite literally:
- conversations with friends
- petulant, privileged people
- no growth
- unlikable characters (I marginally liked Bobbi & that’s it)
- each character was self-centered & looking inward toward themselves then reflecting on their past. This should lead to them making different decisions but really they just went back to old patterns.

I purposefully did the audiobook  because I didn’t want to deal with the lack of quotations.

I have not decided if I liked this book. I’ll give it a three for now & reflect later. (10/28)
