on the other hand, i feel it fell into some unfortunate tropes. frances in particular feels like a bella swan / waif / manic pixie dream girl / not like other girls girl… where a lot of concerning attributes (self harm, eating disorder, selfishness, inability to communicate) seem to be romanticized. and i doubt she would be able to get away with nearly as much or be considered mysterious or cool if she weren’t a thin white woman…! if she were written by a man i’d especially hate it, but written by a woman makes it even stranger - she feels like a self insert for rooney? many plot points and attributes seem to be identical to marianne from normal people and to rooney’s own life…

The characters were very unlikeable, awful at communicating and quite pompous at times which was the eye-rolling moment for me. However, Frances and I DO NOT share the same morals, I did see myself reflecting at my own flaws through her personality as well as sharing the same struggles with Endometriosis which really brought all home for me (weirdly, it gave me a sense of comfort that I am not alone in my battles)

I loved Normal People so this Sally Rooney book was a bit of disappointment. I also think there should have been more content warnings.

I missed the different POV system Rooney uses in Normal People, which make her stories that much more dynamic.
Another bonus is how much I adore Rooney's theme of power. How she defines and uses power in her texts. Sexual, monetary, romantic, patriarcal power all in a tug-of-war scenario through the pages, but only visible if you squint.
Iwill be checking Rooney's new projects.
Graphic: Mental illness
Moderate: Suicidal thoughts and Suicide attempt
