Dystopian. Prejudice. Monsters.

This dystopian story follows Icelyn Brathius, one of the 100 remaining humans whose ancestors fled up a mountain top to escape “the threat below” and live in an almost medieval society with no technology or resources. When the community’s water supply is poisoned from down below, Icelyn finds herself on a dangerous journey through the cloud line to save her people. But all is not as it seems.

I struggled with this one and I can’t put my finger on why because the premise is so incredibly clever and twists in the plot are so wild you don’t know which way is up by the time you’re finished. There’s lots of different elements to this story (politics, character relationships, character hierarchy, action, world building, history etc) and some of it just didn’t interest me; I found the narrative explaining the petty underhand politics slow. I didn’t like the shifts in narrator that weren’t clearly marked meaning I spent ages trying to figure out whose POV we were in.

I found Icelyn a very difficult MC to love because of her backward way of thinking but I understand the idea is you’re not born prejudice, it’s learned; however, it was still very frustrating listening to her prattle on about how she was better than everyone else because she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth, so to speak.

Overall, I think this was a good book but it just wasn’t my cup of tea.
