Esse livro é muito mais do que eu esperava. Ele partiu meu coração e depois colocou os pedacinhos de volta, mas eu nunca mais vou ser a mesma

The novel opens with a somewhat whimsical scene with the goddess Aphrodite having just been caught with Ares by her husband Hephaestus. When the god of fire suggests that Aphrodite immediately be put on trial, the goddess defends herself by telling a story. And so the real story, of love and loss (and much more) during World War I, begins.

I'm not really of a fan of war settings, but I did actually enjoy this, and appreciated a book whose focus was on WWI versus the more ubiquitous WWII. I learned a great deal about the war and its physical, psychological and societal damages. The ending was okay, but the denouement concerning the gods was only meh. Both conclusions wrapped up a little too perfectly, and I'm not sure I fully understood how the "trial" meshed with the rest of the story.

Quite slow in the beginning. It took quite awhile for me to care about the characters
