I enjoyed it better than I expected to. The world building was enjoyable. I didn't feel like the end made sense or was particularly satisfying, and I didn't like where the character arc ended.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Have you ever read a high fantasy book where you wished the characters spent more time in the magical forest's? This is the book for you! Nafiza Azadi, the author, keeps you hypnotized on a wonderful and harrowing journey through magical forests, as a tethering spell pulls Croi; out of her cloaking spell and towards her final destination.

What in the heck was this book? This happened and consequently did not happen. Like what? Like I have no idea what went on? Boring and never need to set my eyes on it again

4.5 so incredibly close stars ugh lol 4.75??
I absolutely adore this author's writing and storytelling and I've loved all three of her books!! I can't remember where I saw it (edit: it was here!! The SG description starts out with it!! Ugh), but someone compared this to cruel prince and wow I am personally offended lol this is a million times better in every single way. I think it was said bc there are all different types of fae and such (called kin in this book, collectively), and they were all amazing to read about! I adored every second of my time in this world, and it's one of those books I could happily live inside forever. (After I get rid of my allergies somehow, probably).

The only things for me are two personal preference things..first idk if I can even explain what I mean, but it needed like ten more pages. I don't mind when books leave things kind of open (I usually prefer it, honestly) when we know absolutely what will happen. I think I just selfishly wanted one more look into the caisleán, and maybe to see that one character suffer as they inevitably will 😅
The other thing is absolutely a me thing, and that's the lack of credit/author's note. I know lore and fae stuff has taken on a life of its own, but so much in here was borrowed from Irish/Celtic/etc mythology...I just really like when credit is given. Even the names were all carefully picked, I would assume, since what they mean in Irish is very fitting for all of them. And if you haven't read this yet ..don't look up the names. It will spoil things!! Again, personal preference. Or maybe just personal annoyance as someone with Irish ancestry.

Despite my brief annoyance, this is still an exceptional story!! I don't think Azad's writing will work for everyone, but it very much does for me. All the characters and locations feel like they absolutely exist, just out of reach. And I love it so much. Croi is so interesting to follow, and her journey (in every sense of the word) was so enjoyable to follow. And although I selfishly wanted a bit more at the end, I did love how a thing at the very end circled back to a thing at the very beginning. And I loved that croi was able to confront some loose threads in her own story, if you will. And I'm glad we got to see that second book!! I was wondering about it haha

The story was beautiful and well told.

Unfortunately, this story only felt half-told and it left me wanting a part 2...But I don't know if we will get a part 2.
