I love that each one of these books is going to follow a different kid in the Magic Misfits. My daughter and I both absolutely loved Leila's story.
Watching her meet the Vernon's and grow into herself and find her place was absolutely wonderful. I do feel like I always hold a special spot for the first character a series is about, you know? The OG that sparked the first feels Ina group of people. I was almost a little disappointed to learn this book wasn't going to follow Carter, but diving into Leila's life was so much better.
Also, Mr. Vernon's secrets are going to drive me mad. Like, as a parent, I totally agree with not telling your kids all your deep darks. But, as a reader, c'mon man! Give me more!
The puzzles are also fun. I absolutely did not hate having to decode a bunch of Morse throughout.

This story has all of the sweet and wonderful characters from the first. This time, Harris delves more into Leila's past, as well as the past of her father and his group of friends from childhood. A lot more is learned, but a lot more secrets are revealed in this story, too. It was nice to hear things from Leila's perspective and to see how close she and Carter have become.
This sequel also includes the same chapter style as the first book and includes magic tricks too. But something of the charm or wittiness of the narrator was lost in this book. There were a few times when a glimmer of it showed through, but it wasn't as consistent as the first book. That is why I am giving it four stars instead of five.

Some of the magic definitely wore off this time around (no pun intended). I think it's still a great book for kids, what with the magic lessons and code work and all. But The pattern is too familiar. Too Unfortunate Events-ish. Again, great for kids, but definitely lost some luster.

Definitely less entertaining than the first one. Starts off with too many characters that don't stand out from each other and just isn't very interesting or fun.
