Wow. Evelyn Hugo feels to me like a real icon. When reading It felt so real, I thought she was a real person in my head. This story crosses the line between fiction and real life. The love story between two queer people in the early 50’s to the 90’s was so beautiful written. I understand the hype around this book. This was a roller coster of emotions, that I feel everybody needs to read at least once. The racial discrimination in this book, forcing people of color to hide there true self. Reallly represents what hollywood standed for back then. The topics of AIDS and how queer people could be punished back then was also well written. This book is for people to feel SEEN and to be their true authentic self. Don’t coware away from who you truely are, don’t like you life in regret. Evelyn Hugo was a raw and sometimes bad person, as well as an icon, but most of all she was human. That is what drove this story, she felt so human to be I couldn’t help but sympathize  with her. AND THE ENDING HELLO ? Wow. I want this to be a movie or tv show ASAP.

Solid 4.5⭐️ 

Taylor Jenkins Reid has definitely found a niche that works perfectly for her style of writing. This felt somewhat familiar because just like Daisy Jones and the Six. We have strong female protagonists that is being interviewed about her past and uses that monologue to leave life lessons for the reader. 

Taylor has a way of blurring the line of history and fiction, to where she might almost have you fooled that you are reading a non-fiction. 

Some of the themes of this book were personally a little much for me, and I figured out the twist as she was telling it, but I was still throughly entertained.

My only complaint about this book is that I wish I read it sooner. It absolutely lived up to all of the hype. 

Evelyn Hugo is an incredibly complex woman. I found myself  impressed by her tenacity and willingness to do literally anything she had to do to make her goals and dreams a reality. In her retelling of her life I found her openness and self-awareness inspiring. 

Taylor Jenkins Reid is a phenomenal author. The way she writes made this incredibly unbelievable story feel real. I loved reading this so much that I finished it in less than 24 hours.

I found Monique to be excruciatingly bland. Whenever the story switched from Evelyn's to her own, I felt like it was more of a chore to get through than something I was genuinely excited about. I know that she is supposed to be a direct contrast to Evelyn and he is less manipulative and decisive, but even towards the end when she learned from Evelyn and became a little more of those things, I found that I still felt nothing towards her.

Even when it was revealed that her father had died and Evelyn made it look like it was his fault, I didn't feel bad for Monique. I felt absolutely nothing, and the one emotion I did feel was a tad of annoyance.

The characters in Evelyn's world were much more interesting and I wanted to know more about them on every page. Overall, the story is great and the dynamic between Monique and Evelyn is fun (the only fun thing about Monique really). Definitely something I would recommend for fans of drama, romance, and old Hollywood.

Also, the ending was much more disappointing and anti-climactic than I thought it would be.

I realize my review is way more negative than I intended, so let me set the record straight: I loved this book. I just wanted to talk about my feelings about Monique, or lack thereof.
