I cried at the end. Every character is so bloody unlikeable, the relationships quite toxic, and yet you kind of can’t help but root for some of them.

I don’t think this is actually that amazing of a book, it’s certainly not life changing. But the ending still got me and it sucked me in, in that way watching reality tv does.

The way I feel about this book in the moments after finishing it feel like an oxymoron, I feel emotional yet all I’ve done is complain about it. I think it’s the sort of book I’ll think of occasionally but never plan on re-reading.

I also hated the first 3ish chapters of this, the initial set up was incredibly boring.

Edit: upon reflection I’m pretty sure the reason I cried so much was pms and sleep deprivation

I wanted so badly to love this book. I heard so many good things about it. But I just couldn’t get into it. It wasn’t anything in particular about it. I just couldn’t connect. I kept finding myself just wanting more out of it and not in a good way. Left me feeling very underwhelmed.

I approached this book tentatively,  because of the implied heterosexual plotline - I had assumed that the LGBT tag was perhaps mistaken. I was delighted to be wrong though. The end of the book was quite dark and occasionally the movement of the plot seemed too complex for the amount of words allocated to it. However, I really enjoyed learning about Evelyn and Celia, and the movie-star world. I would definitely read it again.

Third reread the charm?

Just kidding. This book still haunts my every waking thought. Evelyn is that bitch after all. Meant both affectionately and otherwise.

Here's to continue the bullying campaign to make everyone in my life read Seven Husbands. Gonna slide into the DMs like I am part of a goddamn MLM.

Original review from 2021:

There are few books that have made such an impact on me in so many different ways. I finished it two days ago and still processing it and I think I will be processing it for a long time.

Moments came where I was reading Evelyn's actions as a friend would after finding out what she did, but not out of judgment. Out of concern. I cared about her, her well-being, and her love. She is a flawed person but not a bad person.

I miss these characters so much already, further proof that Taylor Jenkins Reid could write out a note of insults about me, and I would love it.
