Light & fluffy historical mystery with a touch of the Sight and lots of little historical details that I loved.

This was okay. The MC definitely had her stupid moments which is very frustrating to me when they're supposed to be sleuths. I wasn't paying very close attention, so I kinda missed who the culprit was, but I don't care enough to go back and find out. Also, looking back on it, the MC really didn't do much that mattered. It felt like everything she figured out about the mystery was already figured out by the detective. The other characters existed.

The supernatural element is alright, but it's really weird that it wasn't mentioned in the blurb?

The writing is fine enough though I had a few issues that I worry will get annoying over time. The author writes in a very visual way. Not sure how else to describe it. But there was just some weird imagery that didn't work for me. something along the lines of writing: "I envisioned pound notes scattering and floating away on the tide." when the MC was reminded that the murder victim wouldn't be able to pay her overdue fees. And I dunno, it just felt forced sometimes. Like, who thinks in visual metaphors like that? They're also very descriptive of outfits (which makes sense with the MC being a designer, but is a bit dull to read).

I've never read something set in New Zealand, so that was cool. I'll give the next book a chance maybe, but I worry that if I pay more attention, I'll like the book and the characters less. I'm just hoping it will be more interesting if the detective is more involved in the story since he seems to be the competent one.

because you can only read "we lost so many lives during the war" so many times before it gets boring. There are so many ways of depicting the grief of war and the hope for a better future without needing to say the same exact thing every time.

I tried to hold out a little longer, but then just how things are written later I realized that I am not the target audience and I felt unsafe with continuing even if out of politeness for the authors work.
