This story shed light on the Soviet Union police taking Lithuanian citizens as prisoners during WWII and putting them into work camps. I had not previously known about this part of history and was heartbroken to see what the characters endured, especially at the hands of an Allied country. The illustrations were beautiful and the plot was captivating. There are many scenes of heartbreak, death, and loss, but also of hope and kindness. Some historical elements weren't explained explicitly and a lot of inferring has to happen for the reader to grasp some of the more subtle details of historical bits.

I was so excited to read the graphic novel adaptation of one of my favorite books. I loved experiencing the story in a new format, though I will say I wish some sections of the book were a little longer.

The illustrations were beautiful and truly captured the emotions being portrayed from the words, but also those in which words were not used.
