It's a New Year, so it's time to get back into the swing of things! I never finished the Animorphs books or TV series as a child, so I'm reliving my childhood and finally getting some answers on how the Yeerk battle ended. :)

In this book, the Animorphs battle the Yeerks as they attempt to destroy a local forest. Still convinced that the Animorphs are Andalites, the Yeerks theorise that the only place for 5 Andalites to hide is the forest, so they set up a logging company. Fortunately said logging company isn't exactly legal, and they're waiting on the outcome of a vote to proceed. They bring the lone holdout voter to their logging company/Yeerk HQ in the middle of the forest, intent on infesting him to secure his vote if necessary.

The Animorphs attack the logging company/Yeerk HQ as the councillor arrives, and defeat the Yeerks through what can only be described as 'skunk butt'. Cassie sprays Visser Three whilst in skunk morph, and they use the horrible stench as leverage to save the councillor. Ax negotiates the councillor's release for the magical cure to 'skunking'. The councillor recovers from his encounter in hospital and strongly votes against logging in the area, while Visser Three is duped into believing grape juice will solve his smelly problems.

While this is happening, we also have a secondary storyline with Cassie questioning her human vs. animal nature. She cares for a litter of baby skunks while their injured mother recovers in her family's clinic, and in the process begins to question what constitutes right and wrong for an Animorph. She struggles to reconcile her animal-loving ways with the vicious predatory Animorph that fights against the Yeerks.

Y'know how on the surface animated movies seem like a jolly good time, but they're actually riddled with depressing lessons about death, animal testing, deforestation and what-not? This is one of those. On the surface we have this humourous battle against the Yeerks, but then we also have the sad secondary storyline with the temporarily-orphaned skunk kits. I'm a total animal-lover, and I won't watch a film if it contains even the slightest hints of animal death or cruelty. Call me sad, but for that reason, I wasn't sure if I'd be able to finish this book. The story of the skunk kits tugged on my heartstrings, and I'm sure I would have been a pathetic crying mess if they hadn't survived. Thankfully it all worked out!

On that note, I am piiiiissed that nobody but Cassie seemed to care for the animals in that forest. It's incredibly selfish that Jake, Marco and Rachel consider animals useful in the fight against the Yeerks, but they don't give a crap about the Yeerks potentially destroying animal habitats. If nothing else they should have looked at it from a practical standpoint - if animal habitats are destroyed, that could potentially make it harder to acquire new morphs. I really empathised with Cassie as her arguments were dismissed by the others.

On a lighter note, the 'skunking' of Visser Three was pretty funny. These Animorph vs. Yeerk battles usually have my gut in a twist, with the outcome looking bleak (even though I rationalise that there are over 50 books, therefore they probably survive). It was nice to have a little humour interjected in there for once! And the humour was juxtaposed nicely against the skunk kit storyline and Cassie's struggle with animal vs. human nature.

Cassie ponders her place in nature and the animal kingdom, violence and nurturing and how they balance. Pretty good personal examination by the most philosophical, thoughtful member of the group.
