I love the way this is written, and the disjointed way that the Irish Catholic teenagerhood is compared to their later life. I LOVE stream-of-consciousness writing always, and this is done in such an interesting modern way.

The timeline of this book was weird and made it difficult for me to really get in the story but I will say, other than that, that the author has a way of making an impact. At some point it made me really sad. I should read her poetry.

the grammatical style is too hard for me to get over. while it’s super unique, it’s just not my style.

A unique writing style for me, feels somewhere between the beatnik's and Patti Smith, but choppier, non linear and much more queer than the aforementioned. I enjoyed her portrait of new York and the messiness of the queer community and her own mess. The drugs and drinking felt a little cliche for me, but what can you do. She was an artist of her time, and I guess that's what people did instead of therapy in those days. Although she does address alcoholism in short passages and paragraphs, it seems more like a passing aknoweldgement than a serious introspection. But then again this book does not contain a lot of "serious" introspection so maybe I'm setting expectations too high. Irregardless, a lovely coming of age book for any young queer!

took me forever to read, even when i dug into it. i think this is because of the grammar/formatting stuff. but still a very nice read!!
