A charming little book. This novel follows Martha, who has just escaped an abusive relationship and Henry, a scholar who is searching for Emily Brontë lost manuscript. Martha finds a job working for Madame Bowden as her housekeeper. Henry is chasing down a lead to Opaline Gray, one of the finest antiquarian booksellers who started trading around 1920, and who also had a bookshop right next to Madame Bowden’s house. Unfortunately, the bookshop had never seemed to exist. The wording there was a little rough but you get my point. Martha and Henry’s lives become intertwined as Martha searches for her place in this world and Henry searches for his lost manuscript and Opaline’s bookshop. The story alternates between Henry, Martha, and Opaline’s POV. There are a few twists that I didn’t see coming that were awesome. And Lyndon can go to hell for all I care.

I was not expecting this book to have such complex themes! I really enjoyed the characters and joining them on their journeys of self-discovery. The tiny bit of magic was fun and brings out the type of imagination one often has as a child. This is a light and easy read but does have dark topics throughout.

Pretty good until the end,
l liked most of the twists but the twist with Madame Bowden felt a little rushed and confusing

I had to stop reading this book. Between the male love interests of both the women being creepy, try-hard incels, and the author telling rather than showing, I just couldn't deal with it. Usually when I DNF, there is a chance I'll return to it in the future, there is no such possibility with this one.
