Pros:
I am so glad that the author brought in Pounce. I feel that having strong animal sidekicks is part of what always made the Tortall books work for me. Raised on Disney and stories like Catwings and Time Cat it just brings me joy.
It is truly odd to see so many elements from Alanna’s stories in the past of her partner’s family. It makes me wonder if she was goddess touched because she was fated to be with him or if he was drawn in because like knows like.
Cons:
After having the previous books written as stories, this as a personal journal did not have the familiar feel of the other stories and took longer to fall into. It is fascinating to see what Tortall was before and to see a lady knight from before Alanna’s time.

I started off sceptical, but I really enjoyed this book. Can't wait to start the second one.

Ironically, I picked this book up because I'm a dog lover. It ended up being a great read, doing a great job of mixing magic, military discipline (sort of, anyways), and a a different era.
The story was very well spun, with a fair amount of mystery and suspense, and I ended up liking Beka and her supporting cast quite a bit.
I'll pick up more in the series for sure.

Read as part of a book club revisiting friends’ childhood favorites. Yikes. The plot had me hooked, but often against my own will — the book’s world and characters are mired in a dreary lack of morality with little escape in sight, with nonchalant police violence being the recurring star of the show. Find something that’s not about a cop breaking poor people’s arms. It’s redeemed slightly by the endearing tight-knit friendships that form among the central characters.
Graphic: Murder and Police brutality

I've loved almost everything that Tamora Pierce has written. This series is no exception. I enjoy the different perspective on the world that these books offer being a few generations removed in the past.

Adorable book! This one's a re-read. Another great series from Tamora Pierce featuring awesome female characters.
Second read :
Not my favorite this time through. All that talk about her peaches was awkward AF. Hoping I warm to the characters though the next 2 books.
