The only way I can describe this story progression is: upside-down smiley face.

Bought the first chapter compiled in this volume when I found out it was released in 2022 (bought two copies actually 'cause one got lost in the mail but turned out my neighbour Darrell had it and brought it by) and it's still in the wrapping. I lost my nerve. I do think reading the volumes is probably the more cohesive way to approach Saga though. I fairly tore through this (it was due back at the library; still I procrastinated in starting it!) and was in floods of tears at the end. Some really great stuff in here:
Alana treating Squire as her own kid; all the stuff with the band; Fartbox (I laughed hysterically); Hazel being older and helping Alana with her street vending; the bleak expression on Alana's face when the wolf shaman lady comments on Marko not being with her... I found it pretty awful the way Marko's skull(!) got bandied around and was glad when it got destroyed in the spell tbh. Also Gwendoline, what a grudge-holding creep. One thing I didn't like was a chapter ending on Skipper threatening to rape the kids to death in front of Alana, that was cheap tbh esp. when the next chapter started with him all like, Haha what did you expect me to say! I'm a pirate lol! I am left with a lot of questions but luckily Volume 11 is already out.
