I can understand it as a dark comedy, but absolutely not as a cozy heartwarming tale. Ove is not without many flaws which fine, but did the plot have to be so dull? It mostly hinges off bad things happening and Ove reacting to them, which got tiring after a while.
I have a bone to pick with the many slurs, fatphobia, and shrieking women. Might give Backman another chance to see if this was an Ove thing or an author thing but I have limited hopes.

A book about all the different forms love can take, romantic, familial, platonic and more. The book is heartwarming and heartbreaking in equal measure with a good few laughs thrown in. The characters are lovable, diverse and well written.

If you want an easy read, that’s still emotional in all the right ways then Ove’s story is a must read.

Really sweet, heart warming book.

Sobbed through the first half. Made me think of my dad.

There’s something to be said about people from this age group who either never were able, or were never taught or demonstrated how to forgive, how to move on. What your sphere of influence is and others around you

This book is about a man who has good intentions and is sweet on the inside, a nutcracker kind of guy, who is mad for valid reasons and then he finds out life is worth living, okay, and then he’s nice to those around him because they see the soft on the inside of all that hardness.

I don’t find his meanness charming, I don’t excuse him for the way he talks about his neighbors. I empathize with him. The book was sweet, I cried like a hole in a waterpipe, but I did not like ove and I felt bad for the people around him.

There’s this weird phenomena of this generation or men, idk what it is, where;
1. what’s happened to you is the worst thing to happen to anyone ever and you can’t move past yourself to acknowledge the suffering that is living, and,
2. to almost expect your community or the people who you care about to see through your nastiness and show that you’re good. There’s this brand of people who believe that if you do good actions that’ll show you’re good, and you don’t have to show basic human kindness to anyone! Pithy excuse for emotional immaturity that I’m exhausted by and made me angry to read.

Maybe I would’ve enjoyed this years ago or in a different mindset but I couldn’t get past the amount of white man xenophobia, homophobia, ableism, fat phobia and toxic masculinity.

I just couldn’t get behind the author trying to make Ove sympathetic.
I get that his life sucked and all that, but he was mostly an asshole! And I’m over the trope of a super grumpy curmudgeon who has a sunshine wife who gets fridged. I rolled my eyes so hard when the doctor said Ove’s heart was too big.
Aside from character and plot, I don’t know if it was the translation or what, but I found the prose sort of unpleasant to read? I had high hopes for this book because I loved Anxious People but it ended up being meh.

This was sad. And hopeful. It made me cry – but still, there are very questionable (xenophobic, mysoginistic, ableist and fatphobic) things uttered by Ove.

One of the most wholesome books I read. It's a comfortable read, and one you won't regret. Very easy 5 stars.
