"One night... I heard a psychologist say that Americans would organize their memories around [9/11]: before and after. It occured to me that we almost always measure time in relation to what matters most to us... The story I wanted to tell was about young people whose lives are so transformed by an experience that they can only respond by reimagining time itself." -John Green on Looking for Alaska

As a (still somehow) young person with her own ever-growing list of Afters... yes. We're all stuck in the labyrinth. "The labyrinth sucks but I choose it." The best any of us can do is keep trying to seek the Great Perhaps.

Would I read it again? No

John green was kind of a weirdo for this one, tbh. Just really don't like this manic pixie dream girl situation, which I will admit that he kinda does confront, but I also just hate the way he writes about Alaska's body. I understand that it's from the perspective of a teenage boy thinking about a teenage girl, but I was just thinking about 28 year old John Green sitting there writing about this 16 year old girl's breasts hanging from her chest and I just cannot....

I wouldn't read it again (again), but it was fun to revisit a book I haven't read since high school. It does not hold up, but I still like some of the themes ("suffering is universal" had such an impact on me at 16 years old).

I loved it like I thought I’d love it, with all the charms for Green’s writing (apart from a few questionable lines which were acceptable to say at the time) but it didn’t break me like Paper Towns and The Fault In Our Stars did, hence knocking off half a ⭐️
