Interesting! A satirical Soviet perspective of America during the Great Depression. They were really impressed with the ingenuity of Americans, but thought little of the social norms. And they really didn't like Hollywood. I have to agree with them. Included were the pictures taken by one of the reporters - old black and white moments of history - and not professionally done.

I had a lot of tags of quotes that I liked, but I realized I couldn't put all of them in.

p. 125 "Not even God can get along without advertising in America."

p. 139 "The cold January wind ruffled the tall ocean waves."

p. 154. "There is a saying in Russian, 'So, you've discovered America!' which in English means roughly, 'Big deal!' Tell me something I don't know!'"

Soviets talking about United of States of America. I don't think it's completely true and there are some passages that are obviously just some kind of bragging about how good communism and Soviet Russia are. I strongly disliked those passages. But, the rest of it, Russians in America - fairly hilarious.

Ilf and Petrov’s American Road Trip

Originally collected as early photojournalism for Огонёк in the mid 30s, it was republished in the 2000s. Some of the photos were pretty damaged with time, but the sparkling wit of these two great writers is intact. The book is at turns hilarious and saddening as the writers highlight some of the highs and lows of 1930s American culture. Really enjoyed seeing through the eyes of these satirists and definitely want to find «Одноэтажная Америка» (One-storied America) which was also inspired by their trip.

This is an incredibly interesting book. I am surprised it took so long to get it translated into English. The whole thing is a real treasure mine of interesting historical details and ideas along with incredibly sharp commentary from the two Soviet authors.
