Author Geraldine Brooks wrote this story after learning about how the small English village of Eyam dealt with the Great Plague of 1666.
This book is absolutely beautiful. The hope that comes out of utter despair is why I love books like this.
Geraldine Brooks is a very talented writer. She took a standard plague novel and ran with it in directions that make this story a masterpiece

I'll be honest, I listened to the audio book version of this and it was the narrator that docked all the stars. Had I been reading the novel my rating likely would have been much higher.

There were a lot of things I liked about the book. I was carried along by the "mystery" of the plague. I didn't like the ending, however. I didn't think the ending was at all realistic, and that bugged me. A good story, though.

3.5 stars. Well written and inspired me to look up all sorts of things about the real story and the plague, but I didn’t engage with the characters as much as I’d like and the ending didn’t feel right for the rest of the story.
